Writing Flex apps for Flash Player 10 Beta (Astro)

May 16th, 2008

Yesterday Adobe announced the availability on labs.adobe.com of the first public Beta of Flash Player 10, code-named “Astro”. This is a very exciting release as it introduces significant features such as 3D Effects, Custom Filters and Effects, Advanced Text Layout, Enhanced Drawing API and Visual Performance Improvements.

You can start targeting you Flex apps to this release as long as the SDK version you are using is dated May 15th or later. Go to this link on opensource.adobe.com to read more about how to align the Flex SDK framework and the player.

Also worth looking at is Lee Brimelow’s video tutorial on compiling for Flash Player 10.

More code samples and documentation around the new AS classes and APIs will be available soon.

Enjoy!!!

This week speaking at…

May 5th, 2008

The life of an evangelist requires frequent travel and speaking at events around many different countries. Being able to find where we are or talk to us is difficult.

In order to make myself more “trackable” I am going to launch a series of blog postings titled “This week speaking at…” explaining my whereabouts at conferences, events, user group meetings and so forth. This is the first one of the series…

On Wednesday I will be at the Dreamforce 2008 conference in London, the On-Demand event from Salesforce.com. With over 2,000 expected users, developers, partners, and experts, the conference is a great place to learn about the current trends and technologies around Enterprise Software as a Service/Platform as a Service from one of the market leaders in this space, Salesforce.com. You should be able to find me at the Dev Zone talking about Flex/AIR integration with the Force.com platform ( AppExchange ).

From London I fly out to Zagreb on Wednesday evening. I have been invited to speak at Web.Start, the first conference in Southeastern Europe focused exclusively on Web application development and Web startups. I am really looking forward participating in this event as I have never spoken in Croatia before and I am very interested in feeling the vibe around Web 2.0, RIAs, Flex and AIR. So if you are in Zagreb on Thursday, come by!!!

Reposting content from onAIR Train Tour

April 25th, 2008

During the onAIR Train Tour I presented a session on leveraging LCDS/BlazeDS within AIR applications. The slides are located on this link and the client side demos over here.

For the remoting and messaging part you can use either BlazeDS or LC DS. For the DataManagement part you will need LC DS 2.5.

You can download LC DS from www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/dataservices/ and BlazeDS from opensource.adobe.com/blazeds

Let me know if you guys have problems/issues. Enjoy!!!

Flex Perfomance Testing Tools

April 25th, 2008

Over the past weeks there have been a few good announcements/releases around performance testing for Flex applications.

The first one comes from the LC DS QA Engineers at Adobe and it is the updated Adobe Data Services Stress Testing Framework. This new release has been upgraded to support the current LC DS 2.6 Beta and includes key new features and numerous bug fixes.

Borland is also announcing the release of Silk 2008 oriented towards Web 2.0 testing. Not only upgrading SilkPerformer 2008 to support Flex applications (and AJAX), but they are also rebuilding their functional and regression-testing tool (SilkTest 2008) on Adobe Flex.

Last but not least, RadView is also launching a Flex add-on to their WebLOAD solution with support for both AMF0 and AMF3, server-side statistics for both BlazeDS and LC DS, and many more features.

Add all the above to Flex Builder 3 Professional performance and memory profiler, throw in some functional testing via the Flex Automated Testing that also comes with FB 3, and you have all you need to make sure your Flex applications run as expected and fast!!!
